Ottawa's top MMA gym!

It's here! The FightWorld crew was onsite in Ottawa this summer filming MMA: Unplugged with Warior-1. One of the main locations was FIT MMA. This gym is owned and operated by none other than W-1 Champion Craig Brown. He has vast experience in the world of Mixed Martial Arts and his students can be seen on many fight cards. The FightWorld Crew really enjoyed our day spent at FIT MMA. Besides filming our show with many great fighters, we were able to see Craig in action, teaching his class.

The atmosphere at this gym is great! Everyone was very friendly and really hard working. We were able to witness ground work in and out of the cage plus some stand-up techniques. FIT MMA has everything needed for a good complete workout and well-rounded training. As you enter the gym there is a nice weight training room to your left behind the service counter. The main gym area is a nice size and includes a cage, matted floors all around and a boxing ring. All necessary equiptment is available such as , heavy bags, pads, ropes, gloves...you name it they have it!

The details that most impressed us were the encouragement and positive attitudes displayed by all. This is a team and they train hard. We had met them before at a demo they had organized at The Guy Show: Full Octagon, entire FIT MMA Team giving a great series of demonstrations to the thousands of people at the event. It was a very good way to show people what  MMA is all about and that it is something for all age groups.

If you are from the Ottawa or the Gatineau area and want to train with the best... just head over to FIT MMA! You are in for a great workout. They offer a free introductory class! Check out some more pictures of Craig's Gym and all the training offered at FIT MMA is listed below the gallery.

FIT MMA offers the following programs. These are the descriptions directly off thier website: www.fitmma.ca

MMA Training: In the MMA class we combine the best techniques from a variety of different martial arts to form the most effective self-defense system possible. You’ll learn practical techniques that will work for you in a self-defense scenario. The predominate components of our MMA classes Muay Thai Boxing, Wrestling, and Submission Grappling.

* Muay Thai Boxing skills for striking and defense against strikes on our feet
* Wrestling to take our opponent down or defend their takedowns
* Submission grappling to finish the fight on the ground or defend against strikes

We use the most fundamental and highly effective techniques of these three styles in our MMA training. Whilst those separate classes have more scope to go into greater depth in parts, putting them all together is an art unto itself…

Our FIT MMA instructors are not just teachers they are actual competitors in the ring. Craig “Farmer” Brown and Jason Motard have competed in multiple MMA venues such as King of the Cage, Freedom Fight, APEX and the UGC… Successful fighters make successful teachers.

If you want all round martial arts skills to defend yourself at each of these different ranges we highly recommend you train in as many of the other classes as you can…and bring it all together with MMA!

Combat Submission Wrestling: CSW is a complete program covering the broad spectrum of kicking, boxing, clinch, takedowns, grappling/ground fighting and skill/attribute training drills for a complete no gi grappler or a mixed martial artist enthusiast and/or competitor.

This is a grappling system devised by Erik Paulson the former Light Heavyweight World Shooto Champion and utilizes the best standing, takedowns, tackles and throws from Judo, Sambo, Greco, Collegiate and Freestyle Wrestling. The ground grappling system consists of 3 parts:

1. Positioning/Controls
2. Escapes/reversals
3. Finishes/submissions

Beginner Submission Grappling: Submission wrestling (also called submission fighting, and technically referred to as submission grappling) is a general term describing the aspect of martial arts and combat sports that focus on clinch and ground fighting with the aim of obtaining a submission using submission holds.

Our new beginner's class is now in full swing! Come in for a free trial session and see if you like it! Why a beginner's class?

* To build up a baseline level of conditioning
* To ease into submission martial arts, to "test the waters" and see if you like it
* To learn the RIGHT way to do the basics

The beginner's class extends into the CSW class curriculum. Afterwards, a student may roll and attend the "CSW Classes," which is the combat grappling and mixed martial arts class. Special considerations can be made for those with prior experience, with special needs, or who are especially motivated.

Muay Thai:
Muay Thai can be learnt for self-defense, discipline, sport, or simply as a way to get and stay fit. The Club welcomes people of all levels of experience from beginner upwards and includes many women.

FIT MMA provides an atmosphere where members can train in a safe and friendly environment. With the success of Muay Thai in mixed martial arts fighting, it has become the de facto martial art of choice for competitive stand up fighters. As a result, it has evolved accordingly and incorporated much more powerful hand striking techniques used in western style boxing,

No matter what your current fitness level is, we can accommodate your needs from basic keep fit, right up to fighting quality. So if you are looking for a great way to get into shape and improve your fitness, then come learn Muay Thai.

Boxing / Striking: Our Boxing / Striking class provides an intense workout using traditional boxing techniques and individual coaching to improve stand up skills. This is conducted in a welcoming environment using our matted surfaces and the boxing ring. If you are looking for a good sweat this is for you.

What can I expect at a class?

Classes will teach you how to punch properly — it's about technique not strength. There are three main moves to employ: hooks ("side" punches), jabs (straight forward punches) and up-cuts (punches going upwards). Your instructor will tell you which combinations you'll be doing, and may also get you to change partners part-way through the work-out.

Don't think that Boxing / Striking is an easy ride, though: it's seriously hard work. Boxing / Striking is a high intensity, full body workout that will keep you moving the whole time. When you're not throwing a punch, you're ducking and weaving. "We don't let people stop",

What benefits will I see?

Weight loss, increased agility and coordination, muscle tone and greater fitness all result from boxing. Many people think that boxing is all about the arms but it is actually a cardio work-out for the whole body. It's especially good for toning your bottom and quadriceps muscles, which is perfect for women who want to lose weight around their bottom and thighs as part of an overall reduction program There's no need to worry about bulking up, Hilary Swank-style, either. Boxing / Striking is very much a high repetition work-out so you'll see tone rather than muscle. It's also very empowering and people really get pumped up and stuck into it during the moves. While it's not a self-defense lesson, by the end of the first class, you should be able to throw a solid punch.

Strengh Training Program:
Training to excel at mixed martial arts can be a grueling endeavor that takes a great deal of time. Many of the MMA athletes that FITMMA work with often complain that they do not have time to lift weights and the ones that do have time, often focus on the wrong exercises such as: bench presses and biceps curls.

Since time is a factor for combat athletes, we think that a good chunk of time spent on weight training should be spent on explosive exercises such as: dumbbell snatches, swings, and clean and jerks. In addition to building functional strength that will transfer to the ring, these exercises work just about all of the major muscle groups. Moreover, they teach you how to use your body as one unit and build a strong mind-body connection.

FIT MMA has developed the only MMA Strength Training Program in Ottawa specificly designed for MMA fighters. We look at each individual and create the proper program for targeting weak areas while highlighting strengths. Conditioning is what separates the average person to a great MMA fighter and we leave nothing to chance.

Note: After each Strength Training Class we have a group stretch session. 15 Min
